Along the Way

In one of my favorite Sting songs an old man asks, “what good is a used up world and how could it be worth having?”  While we were in France the government lowered the speed limit on certain roads in an attempt to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets. I know there is no way that could fly in the land of NASCAR and monster trucks. Reading about roll backs of coal emissions and lowering fuel efficiency standards and gutted Endangered Species Act protection during yet another hottest summer on record boils the blood. In the mean time, here are a few cool ideas we’ve seen along the way over the last eleven months in Europe.

The Shell House in Ballymaloe decorated

with mosaics of seashells.

Brother Hubbard’s in Dublin makes cups

from recycled coffee grounds.

Telephone booth transformed into a roadside share library

in Rivehaute France.

A farmer’s market stand fits in the back of a van

Sauveterre de Béarn France.

Sign showing time it takes for everyday materials

to biodegrade in Italian park.

I particularly liked the playfulness of this Roman graffiti.

Something for kids to do in public fountain Valencia, Spain.

Plea for girls education programs near central market Cadiz, Spain.

Restaurant delivery mobile Bordeaux, France.

Bumper protection, Bilbao, Spain. If jackets are made with recycled water bottles, what about bumpers and car parts?

One of the many recycling stations in Pamplona, Spain.

Railing made of two pieces of identically cut sheet

metal in Arles.

Bicycle powered loom making Harris tweed on the Isle of Skye.

Pledge in Scottish pub.

A great idea as long as they are paying the musicians well.

Competition for the tidiest town is probably a good idea.

Serious litter patrol in southern Ireland.
